Mosquito-Carried Virus reportedly touches down in Wicomico, Worcester Counties

WICOMICO and WORCESTER CO., -

Officials say sources of a mosquito carried virus were found last month in Worcester and Wicomico Counties.

According to reports, health officials confirmed two pools of Culiseta melanura mosquitoes on July 19 near Rural Place in Wicomico County, and near Sheppard's Crossing in Worcester.

Health officials say the Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus is reportedly spread the same way that Zika and West Nile are, and the development period between once a person is bitten is four to ten days. Symptoms of the virus can be chills, fever, muscle and joint pain, and other discomfort, although some people infected may not experience symptoms.

In about one-third of people infected, the EEE virus can be deadly. Officials say there is no cure or direct treatment, and people with mild illnesses usually get better by themselves even though symptoms can last for months. In dangerous or severe cases, patients often need to be taken to the hospital to get more supportive treatment.

Officials say the EEE virus can be serious and in some cases deadly to humans.

Experts say that the best way to avoid the virus is through mosquito bite prevention. Health officials recommend that people use insect repellents and wear long sleeves outdoors along with installing window and door screens, and taking away standing water from property.
